Overview

In 2010 (exact date TBD), community activists are holding a free, day-long summit addressing street harassment in the Washington, DC metro area. We invite anyone interested in this topic to attend.

Gender-based harassment and assault in public places by strangers, commonly called street harassment, is a societal problem that impedes the equality of all women and gay and trans men by limiting their safety and freedom in public spaces. Several academic and community-focused studies show that anywhere from 80 to 100 percent of girls and women have experienced such harassment or assault by strangers in public places like streets, buses, subways, parks and stores. Visit Holla Back DC! to read dozens of harassment stories from the Washington, DC area.

We believe this behavior must end. Please join us to discuss this problem, learn strategies for dealing with it, and share ideas for how we can work to end it.

(The conference is being postponed from Oct. 2009, until 2010 due to other time commitments of the organizers)
